The UCM Integrative Business Experience (IBE):

What is IBE?

The Integrative Business Experience is a way for students with little or no real-life experience to learn hands-on what business is actually about.  Through group learning the class creates a company, selects a product, obtains a business loan, purchases the product, markets the product, sells the product, and donates the profits to a charity of their discretion.

How do you go about doing this?

In IBE, your goal is to create a successful company.  Classes consist of discussions what makes a company succeed.  We then use what we learn in class and apply it in daily company meetings.  We decide what type of product we would like to create, what positions people would like, and then we elect officers.  Next, we narrow it down to which products we think will be successful.  After we find what we believe to be a successful product we find out what steps need to be taken to get this product produced and then present this to our sales team.  These steps include, licensing and fees, accounting and inventory control, pricing of the product, loan amounts, etc.  After the product decided on, we then contact the banks and give loan presentations to them to get awarded a loan amount.  We then order our product and begin to sell.  When we are done at the end of the semester, we then donate all of our income to a charity of our choosing.

What skills are learned?

You learn how to work and communicate better with others in the business world.  Dealing with manufacturers and distributors can be tricky sometimes and you also learn how to work with them.  You also learn leadership skills and group cohesiveness.  You have to organize events with large amounts of people and you have to learn how to work around others schedules.  You also learn how to use inventory systems and computers.  You get a much better idea of what skills are needed to perform in the business world, and what skills are needed in the different areas of business.
